The Union Cabinet gave its approval to the National Policy on Electronics 2019 (NPE 2019), proposed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.


What is the Policy about?

Replacement of early policy. 
Aims to position India as a global hub. 
Targets

What are the key features?

creating an eco-system for globally competitive ESDM sector 
providing incentives 
providing special package of incentives for mega projects formulating suitable schemes 
promoting Industry-led R&D 
providing incentives and support for significantly enhancing the availability of skilled manpower, including re-skilling 
offering special focus 
creating Sovereign Patent Fund (SPF) 
national cyber security profile

What will be benifits?

The provisions are likely to enable the flow of investment and technology 
Shortfalls 

Present status:

Since the 2012 policy, the Centre has been trying to make India a global hub for electronics equipment but has achieved limited success. Imports of electronics hardware account for more than half of India’s domestic production.

Way Forward:

Increasing demand 
R&D institutions could be promoted through the PPP route, so as to balance the market orientation and long-term priorities.
